the great gatsby

scarce edition.

glamorous jazz age novel chronicling the efforts of millionaire jay gatsby to reunite with his former lover, daisy buchanan on long island. published in 1925 the novel initially was a commercial disappointment in comparison to the author's earlier works. scott died in 1940 believing the work had been forgotten. just two years later, during world war ii, the council on books in wartime distributed free copies to deployed soldiers, resulting in its surge in popularity, which snowballed into a critical re-examination of fitzgerald. "the great gatsby" has since become an essential part of american culture and is included in many high school curriculums.
