saint-exupery's second novel was first published in french as "vol de nuit" in 1931. it quickly became an international bestseller and was adapted for film in 1933. the novel, based on the author's experiences as a pilot, is based in buenos aires during the beginning of commercial aviation. its popularity has been attributed to its emphasis on sacrificing personal considerations for a greater moral cause--a set of values especially in favor during the 1930s and 1940s.
