from the library of harlem renaissance painter ernest crichlow. black skin, white masks is an autoethnography describing the author's experiences living in martinique, france, and algeria alongside an analysis of the psychological effects of colonialism and racism. initially relatively unknown to english-speaking audiences, the work became widely circulated during international revolutionary efforts of the 1960s. in the decades since its first publication in 1952, the text has significantly impacted anti-colonial, anti-racist, and afropessimist movements. translated from french by charles lam markmann.
