a bell jar is a bell-shaped glass jar used to cover delicate objects. in the process of covering, the jar forms a vacuum seal between the object and the outside world. silvia plath's book is a narrative of confinement and social disconnection as experienced by nineteen-year-old esther.

plath died in 1967, just a month after the book's publication in the united kingdom. it was not published in the united states for several more years, per the wishes of her mother and husband.
