vonnegut's classic american novel leads with a satirical exploration of war, sex, racism, and free will. set in the fictional town of midland, ohio, "breakfast of champions" follows an aging science fiction writer who discovers that a rich midwest car dealer is "taking his fiction as truth." before publication, vonnegut had serious doubts about the book's viability. however, it spent 56 weeks on the new york times bestseller list and later found its way into numerous high school curricula.
