all three volumes of the series written by the russian writer and soviet dissident between 1958 and 1968. solzhenitsyn describes the purges and assembling of show trials by stalin through the 1930s, contextualizing these horrors within the gulag's legal and bureaucratic development. his narrative ends in 1956 at the time of krushchev's secret speech denouncing stalin.

the work was first published in french in 1973.
