american actress and singer pearl bailey (1918-1990) was known both for her live performances that mixed humor and music, and for her long movie career. in 1968 she recieved a special tony award for her title role in an all-black production of "hello, dolly!" bailey's autobiography has been described as "witty, informal, honest, and magnetic."
