the complete poems
1972. inscribed by peter kavanagh.
irish poet and novelist patrick kavanagh (1904-1967) was well-known for his accounts of everyday life in his country. as "an unswerving critic of the irish revival" kavanagh wrote incisive commentary that "pilloried the sacred cows of a city and an establishment, whoever or whatever they happened to be at that moment." in his later years, "his poems grew shorter, more visionary, more dissident. the early social comment was burned away and what emerged were poems of deep private displacement."
patrick's career was supported by his brother peter, who worked to publish the poet's work which was for years largely ignored by commercial publishers.
after patrick's death in 1967, peter, then a professor of modern poetry at the university of wisconsin--stout, ended his professorship to publish a series of books on his brother's life. this edition of "the complete poems" features an inscription from peter to a friend.
