the first novel by the author of "1984" provides "a portrait of the dark side of the british raj." deeply critical of british colonialism, the book was initially only published in the united states, where concerns about potential libel due to resemblances to real-life people, places, and events, were less potent. a british edition with altered names appeared in 1951. in writing the novel orwell drew from his experience working for the indian imperial police force in burma from 1922 to 1927.
