jackson's gothic horror novel is full of thrills and fears. a doctor montague invites himself and a few guests to stay in a supposedly haunted house. frightening events ensue.

in a 1959 new york times teview, critic edmund fuller wrote: "with her 'conceit' of hill house, whether pretty be the name for it or not, shirley jackson proves again that she is the finest master currently practicing in the genre of the cryptic, haunted tale."

the novel was a finalist for the national book award. it has been adapted for film twice and is also the point of departure for a netflix series.
