woolf's extended essay, first published in 1929, was based on two lectures she gave at women's colleges at the university of cambridge in 1928. it functions as an extended commentary on the limitations faced by women and women writers. in the essay woolf also constructs a history of women's writing, and discusses lesbianism and censorship in fiction.
