no longer at ease

third printing, 1962. scarce.

the second novel in achebe's "african trilogy" follows "things fall apart" and precedes "arrow of god."obi okonkwo is an ambitious young igbo man who returns to nigeria after studying in britain and joins the colonial civil service. caught between his african heritage and the western values he's embraced, obi becomes entangled in corruption and moral compromise, ultimately taking a bribe.

the title is drawn from t.s. eliot's "journey of the magi," suggesting obi's disillusionment with his new life (he is "no longer at ease" in his own society).

upon release, "no longer at ease" was widely praised for its vivid depiction of post-colonial life in lagos during the early 1960s.
