wittig's novel, first published in france in 1964, surveys key moments of childhood. written in an unconventional style, the book consists of unbroken, extended paragraphs with no chapter headings or numbers, and is narrated directly to the protagonist using "you." the title refers to opoponax, a resin.
the book won the prix médicis in 1964 and was highly praised for its originality. marguerite duras called it as "a masterpiece" for its pure, objective style.
