the mad man

first edition thus, 1994.

set against the gritty backdrop of 1980s new york, delany's novel follows john marr, a black gay philosophy graduate student, whose research into the unsolved murder of the enigmatic timothy hasler—a korean-american philosopher killed outside a gay bar in 1973—spirals into a labyrinth of intellectual obsession and carnal self-destruction. as marr unravels the details of hasler’s life and death, his own sexual encounters grow more extreme, pulling him into an intimately dangerous underground world.

delany creates a collision of multiple worlds: the ivory tower of academia, the volatile streets of manhattan, and the complex, sometimes painful history of gay life in the years leading up to the hiv/aids crisis.
