the i ching, also known as "the book of changes," is an ancient chinese divination text. originally it was a divination manual in the western zhou period (1000-750 bc) but over the course of the imperial period (500-200bc) it transformed into a cosmological text. in second century bc the i ching became part of the five classics associated with confucianism and thus was the basis for divination across the "far east." much later, between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the i ching took on newfound influence as a touchstone for western understandings of east asian thought.
