last and first men and star maker: two science fiction novels
out of print. 1968.
duology of two foundational "future histories": last and first men (1930) surveys two billion years and eighteen human species; star maker (1937) sends a bodiless traveler across galaxies toward a cosmic mind. stapledon (1886–1950), a philosopher-novelist, shaped modern science fiction despite never becoming a mass-market name, and was admired by fellow authors h. g. wells, borges, and arthur c. clarke.
star maker also inspired physicist freeman dyson’s later “dyson sphere" concept through its vision of advanced civilizations harnessing stellar power.
