the concept of dread

kierkegaard’s 1844 study of dread (written under the pseudonym vigilius haufniensis) reframes it as the dizziness of freedom: the vertigo of possibility that precedes guilt. through psychology and theology, he asks how innocence becomes sin and why freedom terrifies us. a seed text for twentieth-century existentialism, long read alongside fear and trembling and the sickness unto death.

translated, with introduction and notes by walter lowrie.
