two tales of the occult

first american edition, 1970.

two metaphysical novellas first published together in romania in 1940. both stories are set in a realist frame, moving slowly from obsession to a gradual unraveling of common logic. “the secret of dr. honigberger” draws on a real 19th-century physician/ traveler. “nights at serampore” slips from a philosophical conversation into the uncanny.

mircea eliade (1907–1986) was a romanian historian of religion and a fiction writer who lived mostly in exile.

translated by william ames coates.
