autoethnography describing the author's experiences living in martinique, france, and algeria alongside an analysis of the psychological effects of colonialism and racism. initially relatively unknown to english-speaking audiences, the work became widely circulated during international revolutionary efforts of the 1960s. in the decades since its first publication in 1952, the text has significantly impacted anti-colonial, anti-racist, and afropessimist movements.
