eyeless in gaza

later edition, 1936.

this ambitious novel traces the moral and spiritual evolution of anthony beavis, moving through childhood, bohemian london, and an eventual political awakening in non-chronological order. both a modern portrait of good and evil and a critique of social futility, excess, and false values. this book marks huxley’s shift from satirical chronicler to seeker of justice, pacifism, and human compassion.

its title, drawn from milton’s "samson agonistes," recalls the blinded samson in gaza, enslaved and forced to labor at the mill.
