m'hashish

2000.

“ah,” said hassan, “i don’t believe in the world. there’s another world where life is different.”

these are stories from that other world. in moghrebi, m’hashish means both “behashished” and, more figuratively, anyone whose behavior seems irrational or unexpected.

blending folktale, parable, and hashish vision, mrabet's narratives slip between everyday life and hallucinatory distortion.

first published in 1968 and translated from spoken moghrebi by paul bowles, with whom mrabet collaborated over decades to bring tangier’s oral storytelling into english.
