olódùmarè: god in yoruba belief

first edition, 1963.

foundational study of yoruba religion by nigerian scholar and theologian e. bolaji idowu (1913–1993), later president of the methodist church of nigeria. drawing on oral traditions, ritual practice, and theology, idowu presents olódùmarè as the supreme deity, correcting colonial misrepresentations of yoruba religion and situating it within the global study of faith.

idowu approaches this history and ritual from a theological rather than anthropological viewpoint.
