the left hand of darkness
2014.
written as a travelogue from a male anthropologist who is sent to persuade gethen, a planet devoid of gender distinctions, to join the ranks of a confederation of planets called ekumen.
le guin used "the left hand of darkness" as a thought-experiment to make plain gender relations within american society of the 1970s. while the novel is celebrated as a cornerstone of feminist science fiction, it ignited debate within the feminist community as many felt le guin should have been more radical in imagining a genderless society.
