this issue reprints manning marable’s essay “through the prism of race and class,” originally published in socialist review (may/june 1980). marable, then senior research fellow at the africana studies and research center at cornell university and executive director of black research associates, was described in the series as “perhaps the most widely-read black activist in the united states” at the time.
