ramona: a story

a polemical work disguised as a romance novel, jackson wrote ramona in response to the failure of "a century of dishonor" to draw attention the mistreatment of the indigenous population. while ramona was ultimately very popular, it's immediate result was a wave of california tourism, rather than political change. jackson's work did eventually influence minor reform legislation.
