the woman warrior
inscribed first british edition, 1977. presentation copy.
a remarkably charming wedding present given to friend and colleague david henry hwang:
"sept. 21, 1985
for david and ophelia
on the occasion of your wedding-
with evergreens (p. 28)-
love, maxine + earll kingston"
on page 28 kingston has marked and underlined the fragment: "like a bride; she wore juniper leaves in her hair..." and left a traditional chinese paper cutting of shenndong, known as the divine farmer.
both are towering figures in chinese-american literature. they have each been on the record as influencing each other's work; kingston especially influencing hwang. kingston wrote the foreword for david henry hwang's 1983 book "broken promises: four plays."
