295 bowery suicides

2021.

the address 295 bowery was once the site of mcgurk’s suicide hall, where, in a grim legend from 1899 thirteen young women are said to have taken their own lives. the bowery’s association with suicide stretches back much further to english colonial rule, when laws mandated that those who died by suicide be buried along the roadside, often with a stake driven through their body.

woodward's book examines 295 additional suicides on bowery, revealing the harsh realities faced by people living there over nearly three centuries. with today’s rapid gentrification of the area, telling this history feels especially significant to the author.
