george jackson (1941-1971) became involved in revolutionary politics while doing time at san quentin state prison for armed robbery. with w.l. nolen he founded the black guerrilla family, describing himself as a "marxist-leninist-maoist-fanonist."
in 1970 jackson and two other prisoners were charged with killing a prison guard. the three of them were thus known as the soledad brothers. later that year, jackson published his autobiography//manifesto, "soledad brother: the prison letters of george jackson." it was a near-instant bestseller. during an escape attempt in 1971, jackson was murdered by prison guards.
