memoir recounting the author's experience of returning to iran during the revolution (1978–1981) and living under the islamic republic until her departure in 1997. nafisi chronicles the book club where she welcomed a group of female students to her home every thursday morning to read and discuss western literature. interwoven with these sessions are nafisi’s reflections on the early days of the revolution, when she began teaching at the university of tehran amid the protests and demonstrations.
