another country

fifth printing, 1962.

set in greenwich village, harlem, and france, "another country" traces the downfall of jazz drummer rufus scott and the effects of his suicide on those closest to him.

baldwin started writing the novel in 1948 in new york, and continued working on it in paris. in 1959 he recieved a $12,000 grant from the ford foundation to finish the project. baldwin completed the book in istanbul in 1962.

while published to somewhat positive reviews, the book was widely censured due to its features of queerness, interracial relationships, and extramarital affairs.

baldwin inferred from the novel's enduring popularity that "many more people than are willing to admit it lead lives not at all unlike the lives of the people in my book."
