a book of common prayer
first edition, 1977.
set in the fictional central american country "boca grande," didion's third novel is narrated by grace strasser-mendana, an american expatriate who married into one of the nation's politically dominant families. grace narrates the experiences of charlotte douglas, another american whose daughter marin has run off with marxist radicals and whose marriage to her husband is falling apart.
in a 1977 review in the new york times, fellow author joyce carole oates proclaimed that, in this novel, didion "investigates the consequences of [a social] breakdown over the past two decades, particularly on parents and children."
