the irish playwright poet, and author oscar wilde (1854–1900) is known for his sharp wit and iconic works like "the picture of dorian dray" and "the importance of being earnest." a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement, he championed "art for art's sake" and became famous for his flamboyant style and social commentary. in his lifetime wilde was censored, imprisoned, and exiled due to his sexuality.
