the paintings of joan mitchell
2001.
joan mitchell was one of the few prominent female artists among the abstract expressionists, and likely because of this, her work did not receive the same recognition as that of her male counterparts. as a result, her paintings went largely unseen in new york for twenty-five years until her 2002 retrospective at the whitney museum, the paintings of joan mitchell. this beautifully curated volume accompanies that retrospective, working to place her work within the broader context of american painting. the collection spans her entire career and is paired with three distinct essays: jane livingston interprets mitchell’s art through her personal papers, journals, and correspondence; linda nochlin offers insight into mitchell’s experience within the male-dominated art world, drawing on their close friendship; and yvette lee focuses on a series of paintings from the early 1980s titled la grande vallée.
the catalogue includes an exhibition history, artist bibliography, color plates, and listings of all the works featured in the exhibition.
