before color
first edition, 2010.
william eggleston spent the 1950s capturing suburban memphis with high-speed 35 mm black and white film, revealing motifs and styles that would later define his color photography. this collection includes images of diners, supermarkets, and the mundane aspects of everyday life.
fifty years later, these photographs were discovered in a box labeled “early photography” at the william eggleston artistic trust in memphis and were subsequently exhibited at the cheim & read gallery. scanned and developed by eggleston in his own darkroom, these images are presented together in their entirety for this collection.
