the princess bride
first edition, 1973.
a comedic modern fantasy by an award-winning screenwriter-cum-author. farmboy wesley and princess buttercup fall hard for each other but wesley must endure a series of trials and tribulations before seeking the fair maiden's hand in marriage. initially robinson's novel was not a commercial success. in 1980 sci-fi author and editor spider robinson included "duel scene"--an excerpt from "the princess bride"--in his anthology "the best of all possible worlds", exoposing the novel to a wider audience. goldman adapted the novel for film in 1987 to modest success. over time, it has become a cult classic.
