tropic of cancer
first us edition, 1961.
autobiographical novel published in 1934 in france and banned in both england and the usa until the early 60s for its risqué (“obscene”) content. miller initially intended to title the work "crazy cock" but later settled on a title referencing cancer as "the disease of civilization."
"tropic of cancer" details miller's life as a struggling writer in paris, containing narrative and stream-of-consciousness elements in a nonlinear organizational schema.
