first edition, 1972.

leonard cohen's fifth poetry collection and one of his most controversial works. known for its dark, intense tone, this book is often described as "deliberately ugly, offensive, bitter, and anti-romantic." cohen himself saw it as a raw expression of his personal struggles, stating, "i'm in pain" when describing the work.
