song of solomon
book club edition, 1977.
"this is a full novel — rich, slow enough to impress itself upon us like a love affair or a sickness — not the two-hour penny dreadful which is again in vogue nor one of the airless cat’s cradles custom-woven for the delight and job-assistance of graduate students of all ages." (from the new york times)
follows the life of macon "milkman" dead iii, an african-american man growing up in michigan, from birth to adulthood. morrison blends african-american folklore with the american history, and its characters face profound questions of identity, belonging, and family. the novel grapples with issues of racial discrimination, family dynamics, and the search for roots.
morrison's third novel won the national book critics circle award and was later selected for oprah winfrey's book club, introducing her work to a wider audience. in 1993 morrison was awarded the nobel prize in literature.
