the picture of dorian gray

early illustrated edition, 1931.

first published as a novella in lippincontt's monthly magazine in 1890, the novel-length version was released in 1891 in england. upon publication it offended british society, with some book reviewers suggesting that it violated public morality laws. the moralistic scandal drew in large part from the book's homoerotic content, which wilde scaled back between the novella and novel versions. until the 1980s the book was widely overlooked and considered poorly written; it is now considered as masterpiece.

"the picture of dorian gray" was oscar wilde's only novel.
