the debut love story by author ernest j. gaines (1933-2019). gaines wrote his first novel at seventeen, but burned the manuscript after it was rejected by a new york publisher. he later rewrote it as "catherine carmier." the novel is set in "a deceptively bucolic louisiana countryside, where blacks, cajuns and whites maintain an uneasy coexistence."
