first edition, third issue, 1957.

early printing of eponymous, timeless children's book. considered a turning point in the career of the author dr. seuss (theodore geisel). geisel created the book in response to 1950s debates about childhood literacy. considered the successor to "dick and jane" style readers, it was so successful that random house subsequently created an early readers' division with the cat in the hat as its logo.

issue points include: glazed boards with dust jacket priced 195/195; “beginner books” not listed as a series; 3 signatures in the binding; "for beginning readers" in circle on the front panel of the jacket; b-1 on the lower edge of the spine panel of the dust jacket.

new york: random house. 9.25 x 6.75". 61 pages. hardcover. book condition: owners inscription to paste down and front free end paper. very mild soiling throughout. corners bumped, with mild shelfwear. very good +. jacket condition: slight soiling to rear and light shelfwear. generally a beautiful copy. near fine.
