the first of vonnegut's books to become a bestseller. a semi-autobiographical sci-fi anti-war novel following billy pilgrim. billy is captured by the germans while serving as a chaplain's assistant during world war ii. he starts to experience time travel and is eventually abducted by aliens. the non-chronological tale unfolds as more of billy'd life on earth is revealed. in a 1969 review the new york times stated, "you'll either love it, or push it back in the science-fiction corner."
