orpheus descending (with battle of angels)

an adaptation of the legend of orpheus and euydice, which williams had already attempted to adapt for his 1940 play battle of angels. orpheus descending opened to widespread critical reception. williams would re-write the legend five times over seventeen years. in 1957, marlon brando and anna magnani starred in the on-screen adaption directed by sidney lumet.
