the bildungsroman by the german-swiss poet, novelist, and painter hermann hesse. it was first published in 1919 under the pseudonym "emil sinclair" which is the name of the narrator of the story.
hesse was eventually revealed to be the author and his name was printed on book beginning with the tenth edition. thomas mann notably wrote an introduction to the book in 1947.
