many of the stories were first published in the widely circulated latin american newspaper "critica" between 1933 and 1934. the collection was first published in buenos aires in 1935 in spanish, and a revised version was released in 1954. borges was initially reluctant to authorize an english translation; the first one, by di giovanni, was not published until 1972, when it was released simultaneously in the united states and canada, and the following year in britain.
the beginning of the "magical realism" genre has been associated with the publication of this book.
