first edition, 1967.
compliation of quatrains attributed to persian polymath omar khayaam (1048-1311).
the selection known as "the rubiyyat of omar khayaam" was first compiled and translated by the english poet edward fitzgerald in 1859. over a century fitzgerald's translation became one of the most widely quoted poetry volumes in the english language. in the coming years dozens of additional translations were published, both in english and many other languages.
this translation put forth by robert graves and omar shah, created a scandal due to the pair's claims that they had based their work on a twelfth-century manuscript found in afghanastan. however, the manuscript never appeared and their claims were eventually disproven. introduction by robert graves. translation and preface by omar ali-shah.
