collection of eight tales by richard wright (1908-1960), author of "native son." each story follows a black man "at odds with a white world." of the volume, which first appeared in 1961, the new york times wrote: “all eight men and all eight stories stand as beautifully, pitifully, terribly true," calling it "rich with insight and understanding, even when occasionally twisted by sorrow.”
