first published in 1972 by giulio einaudi editore, "invisible cities" is, as a new york times review put it, "an elegy, autumnal and melancholy." the book, which signified one of calvino's earliest departures from the short-story form, consists of a prose-poem depicting a conversation between the explorer marco polo and the mongol emperor kublai kahn. through this poem, calvino depicts 55 different (fictiious) cities narrated by polo.
