january book club: yoko ogawa's the memory police

Wednesday, Jan 07, 2026 - Wednesday, Jan 28, 2026

we're thrilled to announce our january book club selection:

the memory police by yoko ogawa! ???? ????

set on a small, unnamed island, the memory police unfolds in a world where ordinary objects—birds, roses, photographs—suddenly "disappear," along with the memories attached to them. when the authorities enforce these disappearances, the residents learn to adapt by forgetting, even as their sense of self quietly erodes. as a novelist tries to preserve what is being erased, the story becomes a haunting meditation on identity, language, and who controls what gets remembered. fun fact: ogawa began writing the memory police in the 1990s, long before contemporary conversations about surveillance—yet its questions about memory and control feel eerily prescient. can't wait to disappear into this january read together.
