the antiphon

first edition thus, extremely scarce, 2000.

three-act verse tragedy set in england in 1939 during world war two. the hobbs family reunion takes place in their ancestral home, burley hall. highly stylized and poetic, barnes' drama reveals dark familial secrets and escalating violence. initially published in 1958, this was the last of her major works to reach the public eye.

despite a difficult reception and few performances, barnes regarded this as her most important work (moreso even than "nightwood," which was the popular favorite).

this edition is the 54th in green integer's series of pocket-sized books.
